In eighty-one brief chapters, Lao-tzu's Tao Te Ching, or Book of the Way, provides advice that imparts balance and perspective, a serene and generous spirit, and teaches us how to work for the good with the effortless skill that comes from being in accord with the Tao-the basic principle of the universe. I have to say that I learned quite a bit. There are also pictures of the countries’ national flags at the beginning of the book and then again as a test at the end. Written as if Captain Frankie is talking to us over the plane’s intercom, each wonder is introduced by a poem and then there is some age-appropriate factual information, together with a simple quiz for the children to do.Īt the end of the book, Captain Frankie asks the children to name out loud the seven natural wonders they have just visited. These span all four continents and whilst I had heard of some of them (for example, Mount Everest in the Himalayas and Australia’s Great Barrier Reef), others I had not (Paricutin Volcano in Mexico) or would not have thought of (The Grand Canyon in Colorado, USA). Author Anna Othitis, originally from Zimbabwe and now living in America, introduces us to her son, Captain Frankie of Angelic Airlines and the story sees him fly us around the World to visit our planet’s “seven natural wonders”. WINNER of the EDGAR AWARD for BEST NOVEL and #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! "It was a very frank portrayal of what it was like to be a teenager," Harry, who lives in Sydney and is now a young adult author, said during a phone interview.Ī few years ago, Harry decided to reread the novel - this time with her own 11-year-old daughter. The book's straightforward account of puberty felt radical, and Harry breezed through the whole book in one sitting. Harry's mother read it when it was first published in 1970 before sharing it with preteen Harry in the '80s. The seminal coming-of-age novel, which tells the story of sixth grader Margaret Simon who's anxious for her body to mature and conflicted about religion, has been a cultural touchstone for generations of girls and women. MIAMI - When Pip Harry first got her period at 11, her mother handed her pads and a copy of Judy Blume's "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret." I loved that they showed personal growth and I especially loved watching the bonds form between Claire, Hero, and Leto.Ĭlaire was hands down my favorite. They were well-crafted with motivations and histories that provided a rich tapestry for the story and drove the plot forward. I don’t think there was one I didn’t enjoy. The Characters: Well-Crafted Individuals Who Drove the Story Forward After finishing this gorgeous book, of course, because it’s a real delight. For a writer, I think it offers a good kick to get back to writing. Not only did it offer an incredible adventure, but it also made me look at my own unfinished and unwritten stories in a completely different light. When one Hero escapes the Library, it sets of a chain of events involving the Devil’s Bible, angels, other realms of the dead, and one of Claire’s own unwritten characters.Īs a book lover and a writer, I absolutely loved this book. It’s her job to care for all the unwritten stories ever created and to track down any books that come to life in the form of one of its characters. (I would have liked some captions, however.) He celebrates home cooking and high cuisine, offering what he calls a “tablescape” of American food. “New American Table” is so much fun to page through, with pictures by Paul Brissman of the food but also of the people who make it and the places it comes from all over the U.S. Samuelsson is best known as the chef and co-owner of the New York City restaurant Aquavit the First Family brought him to Washington to help prepare President Obama’s state dinner earlier this month. (Line 4)Īnaphora: "I love thee" - This parallel structure emphasizes that the poem is in many ways a catalog or list of ways that Elizabeth loves Robert. (Lines 8 & 9).Īllusion: "For the ends of being and ideal grace." - This allusion to the bible with the "ideal grace" helps to show how pure Elizabeth's love for Robert is. Smiles, tears, of my whole being and, if God bids it be,Īlliteration: " put" - Browning uses this alliteration to describe the extent of her love and how it is lucid and just a natural feeling that she experiences towards her husband, Robert. My soul can reach, when feeling invisibleįor the end of life and optimal existence. The title obviously reveals that the piece of poetry is a sonnet with 14 lines with a rhyme scheme. "Sonnet 43" sounds like a one sonnet out of a collection. |
